Discovered by a British police officer.Located at an altitude of 1,200 meters above sea level, the caves were discovered in 1890 by Fred Fawcett, a police official belonging to the erstwhile state of Malabar.

A huge boulder straddling a massive fissure.The cave is formed by an enormous boulder straddling a massive fissure in a gigantic rock, creating a covered space that is 96 feet long, 22 feet wide and 30 feet high.The cavernous interiors of the cave are replete with stone carvings belonging to the Neolithic era, and have drawn the serious attention of archeologists and historians worldwide.
