Himachal Pradesh is gearing up to embrace eco-friendly public transport. Chief Minister Sukhvinder Sukhu recently revealed an ambitious initiative to convert the state-run Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) to an entirely electric fleet by March 2025.
This announcement was made during the HRTC's golden jubilee celebrations, attended by prominent dignitaries, including Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri. Sukhu praised the HRTC for its significant contribution to the state's development, highlighting its role in providing a reliable and comfortable mode of transportation along Himachal's winding roads.
The Chief Minister recognized the dedication and efforts of HRTC staff, crediting their hard work for the company’s fifty years of success. During the ceremony, several important announcements were made, including the timely payment of salaries and pensions to HRTC employees and retirees on October 28. Furthermore, the government will allocate INR 50 crore to settle 55 months of overdue overtime payments, aiming to clear these by March 31, 2025. Additionally, outstanding medical bills amounting to INR 9 crore will be addressed within two months, underscoring the government's commitment to employee welfare.
The Chief Minister highlighted the importance of replacing HRTC's fossil fuel-powered buses with electric vehicles, emphasizing that this transition will enhance the corporation's financial stability and reduce its environmental impact. He urged the HRTC to plan for the next 50 years while sharing his personal reflections on the corporation’s achievements.
Significant progress has already been made under the current government, with approximately 7,300 HRTC employees benefiting from the old pension scheme (OPS), 1,546 contract workers being regularized, and 608 new jobs created, with an additional 550 positions set to be filled soon. Moreover, 421 employees have received promotions, demonstrating the government's commitment to staff development.
During the event, a coffee table book celebrating HRTC's history was launched, and outstanding staff members were recognized for their contributions. Deputy Chief Minister Mukesh Agnihotri commended the professionalism and dedication of HRTC employees, who continue to excel in challenging conditions, thereby enhancing the company’s reputation as a reliable and comfortable employer. With an investment of INR 327 crore, the introduction of electric buses is anticipated to modernize the fleet and boost public trust in HRTC services.
