Lodhi Garden - A Historic Oasis in the Heart of Delhi

Lodhi garden is one of the historical gardens in Delhi. It was once known as 'Lady Willingdon Park', but after independence, it was given the name of Lodhi Gardens. It is at Lodhi Road near the Safdarjung's Tomb and Connaught place. It spread over 90 acres. It contains, Mohammed Shah's Tomb, Tomb of Sikandar Lodi, Shisha Gumbad and Bara Gumbad. It was built between 15th-16th centuries by the Sayyid and Lodhi rulers.

Lodhi garden has many pieces of tombs and mosque. In the middle of the gardens is the Bara Gumbad which is a gateway to an attached a three domed masjid (mosque), built in 1494 during the reign of Sikander Lodi. Opposite the Bara Gumbad is the Shisha Gumbad for the glazed tiles used in its construction.

Lodhi garden is a good example of a combination of the Hindu and Islamic styles of architecture. The Hindu features include eight chhatris, each of them capped by a lotus finial with a decorative band around the base; corner ornamental guldastas and chhajja.

The tomb of Mohammed Shah is visible from the road, and is the earliest structure in the gardens. The Lodi Gardens have many species of trees, a Rose Garden with more than 200 varieties of roses, and a Green House, where plants are stored.

Lodhi garden is a famous picnic spot in Delhi. In the current day it is one of the best jogger's park in Delhi. You can find a large variety of joggers people, fitness freaks practicing yoga person or person for meditation amidst the lush green environment. Families visit when the weather is pleasant.
